5 Days In

(a blog entry I made on our ministry website...I was lazy tonight)

It really is hard for me to believe we are here..and not going home in a few months or weeks. It is a long time coming and I really was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to happen or if God's plan for us was to serve in a different way than I envisioned. But with fear and doubt we are here and it feels right and it feels good, although I know that feeling good is not a marker of making the "right" decision.

It is clear that there is much work to be done.

Mi Esperanza is growing! On Weds. I was able to visit our new satellite sewing class in a village called Los Torres. We have 30 women enrolled in our program there. We have also had requests to bring our beauty class there as well . On Monday I will be visiting a couple of communities to find a home for our satellite Pinata Making class. We have a local women who is going to donate her time and materials to teach the class for Mi Esperanza. The City Center is full of activity with our sewing co-op and on site classes. We just completed a Personal Skills Class of 30 women which teaches the women to face the work force when they complete their training. We will beginning rudimentary spanish classes in the near future as well for the women who come to us and do not read or write at an adequate level.

Mark is busy preparing for summer Torch groups. He will see 100s of volunteers come through the city prepared to meet the immediate needs of the poorest of the poor. The needs are real and they are many.
The world economic crisis is alive and raging in this place. The soaring fuel and food cost are staggering to those living on pennies a day. People are staving, it is true! People are living without adequate shelter, with no food, with no health care, with no clean water. The needs are real and they URGENT. The injustice of the world falls hardest on the poor. Mark will organize and mobilize the volunteers to accomplish the most possible with each group. The next two months will be jammed packed with service of compassion.
