Jonathan on his Birthday
Mark and I left Honduras at the end of August with great sadness in our hearts having to leave behind so many people that we have grown to love. You have all read about our "boys" of San Miguel from the summer, if not scroll read down through our summer posts. In September one of those boys, Jonathan fell from a tree into a river bed and broke both of his hips and arms, suffered head injury and many bumps and bruises. Jonathan was brought to Hospital Esquela, the state run hospital for the poor ( just let your imagination run with thoughts of what that is like). He under went an 8 hours surgery and spent 3 months in the hospital. When this happened all the boys contacted us because Jonathan's mom did not have the money for Jonathon's surgery. When the news got out many people who had met Jonathon this summer wanted to help with the costs so with the help of a liason Joe, a full time missionary and dear friend, we sent money and Jonathan recieved the care that Hospital Esquela could provide.

He also provided much moral and loving support to Jonathan and his famly. We were grateful! Since the surgery Joe had been keeping an eye on him and told us the progress was slow in Jonathan's recovery.
When we arrived here on Monday one of our first tasks was to see how Jonathan was doing. We found him still in good spirits, the full of life boy we left behind but, he was still not walking, had a terrible infection on one of his hips and couldn't use one hand. Our hearts were so heavy for the condition we found Jonathan.
Joe was excited to tell us of a Doctor, an Orthopedic Specialist he had just met that was doing work among the poor. We contacted him and he was willing to see Jonathan. We called on Monday night and he told us to come to his office the next day at 5:00pm. We were thrilled! So Tuesday at 5:10 Dr. Rojas examined Jonathan, took x rays and advised us on what was needed to help Jonathan walk again. He was going to need another surgery to remove 4 pins that had been placed in his arms and legs. He said the pins should have never been put in such a young boy and even though they had they should have never been left in so long. Jonathan asked the doctor "after this how will I walk?" and the doctor told him "normal like any other child" and Jonathan smiled....with relief and tears.

Waiting to see the Doctor
He scheduled the surgery for Thursday (today) at 9:00am. He also told us that his and the anesthesiologist would be given free of charge that we would only have to pay the hospital, what a blessing that was to hear! Of course we thanked the doctor and asked his how we could repay him? He said "Pray for my Children" He then shared that he was a devote catholic believer and that God had blessed his so much, in so many ways he wanted to give back just a bit, to use the gifts God had given him to bless others, of course we were all in tears inlcuding him.
So today we arrived at the hospital at 8:00am. Checked Jonathan into the hospital, and waited as his surgery was completed. The report was good....the bones had all healed well, there was no perment damage and in a week Jonathan would be walking! How happy were we!
While checking out of the hospital Jonathan's mom was showing us the pins that had come out of Jonathan and he asked us "is there was a hospital who could use the pins to help someone else?" His heart is growing!

Going Home

Home in bed
We brought Jonathan home, got them settled and we will see him daily till we leave and of course stay intouch when we leave...
So I tell this story to say..When God's people listen to the spirit and act, miracles happen, one did for Jonathan and his mother. I think of all the people that had a hand in this miracle..each listens to the spirit of God telling them to act and with each action and each part the whole became a miracle for Jonathan...He will walk!
